O Yo La Tengo é uma das bandas que menos possui o reconhecimento que merecia ter na história recente do rock alternativo. Sua trajetória, que ocupa boa parte da década de 80 e daí em diante, é recheada de excelentes discos, boa reputação perante à crítica e respeito em geral no meio musical, além da rara integridade e consistência em sua obra que remete a outros grandes nomes como o Sonic Youth e R.E.M… Apesar do que isso tudo possa sugerir, o Yo La Tengo não goza de nenhuma grande massa de fãs e nem costuma figurar em listas de mais ouvidos/vendidos ou de prêmios. O Yo La Tengo passa sempre a idéia daquela banda mais tímida, avessa aos holofotes, que se dá por satisfeita em gravar seus discos e saber que estes sempre serão bem recebidos e comemorados por aqueles poucos que acompanham fielmente a sua carreira. Não conta com o apoio da mídia e muito menos o alvoroço de um grande público, mas a reputação que o grupo possui dentro da comunidade indie rock mundial é uma das mais sólidas e respeitáveis. O núcleo da banda é formado pelo casal Ira Kaplan e Georgia Hubley. Ira e Georgia se conheceram no meio musical (ela era baterista e ele crítico musical que escrevia para algumas renomadas publicações de New York, além de ser guitarrista nas horas vagas) de Hoboken, pequena cidade americana localizada em New Jersey. Casaram-se e, em 1984, formaram o Yo La Tengo. O nome escolhido é uma frase em espanhol que significa “eu a tenho” ou “eu a peguei”, costumazmente proferida em jogos de baseball. Para completar o line-up da banda, Ira e Georgia fizeram anúncios em busca de músicos que compartilhassem com eles o gosto por Soft Boys, Mission of Burma e Love. Após a passagem de alguns baixistas e guitarristas pela banda, o Yo La Tengo firmou-se com o guitarrista Dave Schramm e o baixista Mike Lewis. Essa formação lançou em 1985 o single “The River of Water”, que possuia um cover para a canção “A House is not a Motel” do Love. Em 1986 é lançado o primeiro LP, chamado “Ride the Tiger”. O disco saiu pelos selos Coyote e Twin Tone e foi produzido por Clint Conley, baixista do Mission of Burma. “Ride the Tiger” tem primordialmente influências de Byrds e R.E.M., e foi muito bem recebido por aqueles que já conheciam o Yo La Tengo pelas suas muitas apresentações no Maxwell’s, em Hoboken, onde a banda já havia conquistado um certo reconhecimento. Yo La Tengo is one of the bands that fewer have the recognition they deserved in the recent history of alternative rock. His career, which occupies much of the 80s and thereafter, is filled with excellent records, good reputation with respect to criticism and in general in the music, as well as rare integrity and consistency in his work that refers to other big names such as Sonic Youth and REM ... To complete the line-up the band, Ira and Georgia made announcements in search of musicians who share with them the taste for Soft Boys, Mission of Burma and Love. Um dos mais tradicionais grupos de rock brasileiro, os Paralamas do Sucesso começaram a tocar juntos no começo dos anos 80 em Brasília. Logo o baterista Vital saiu da banda, virou tema de uma música e foi substituído por João Barone, no trio básico ao lado de Herbert Vianna (guitarra e voz) e Bi Ribeiro (baixo). Essa formação mantém-se estável há cerca de vinte anos. Já no Rio de Janeiro, gravaram uma fita demo e mandaram para a Rádio Fluminense, que, em busca de novos grupos de rock, divulgou as músicas da fita, transformando "Vital e sua Moto" no primeiro sucesso do grupo. O primeiro disco, "Cinema Mudo", saiu pela EMI em 1983 e teve razoável êxito. A consagração veio com o segundo, "O Passo do Lui", de 1984, que incluía alguns dos maiores sucessos da banda: "Óculos", "Meu Erro", "Ska" e "Romance Ideal", todas de autoria de Herbert Vianna. No ano seguinte, o terceiro LP, "Selvagem?" teve mais de 700 mil cópias vendidas e emplacou duas das músicas mais tocadas no ano: "Alagados" e "Melô do Marinheiro", que começou a indicar a pioneira mescla com MPB, que se intensificaria nos discos seguintes. A banda manteve uma produção constante de discos e sucessos, suscitando algumas polêmicas como a música "Luís Inácio (300 Picaretas)", que criticava o Congresso Nacional. Outros sucessos são "A Novidade", "Cinema Mudo", "Fui Eu", "Lourinha Bombril", "O Beco", "Vamo Batê Lata" e as baladas "Lanterna dos Afogados" e "Quase Um Segundo". Se apresentaram em festivais europeus e são uma das bandas mais populares na Argentina. Em 2001, já se preparando para gravar um novo disco, Herbet Vianna sofre um trágico acidente. A queda do ultraleve na baía de Angra dos Reis quando ele estava a caminho da casa de Dado Villa Lobos matou sua mulher, Lucy Needham Vianna e o deixou entre a vida e a morte. Felizmente isso não o incapacitou para a música e já em outubro de 2002, ensaios com a banda completa se realizavam no estúdio de sua casa. O resultado foi tão bom que levou gradualmente ao CD “Longo Caminho”, lançado pela EMI Music, com repertório composto antes do acidente. Hoje e o nome do primeiro disco com músicas compostas pelo grupo após o acidente de Herbert Vianna, já que o repertório de “Longo Caminho” já estava composto antes do desastre. O álbum traz 13 faixas completamente inéditas, com as participações de Nando Reis, Andeas Kisser, Manu Chao, Marcelinho da Lua e Apollo 9. [Fonte:cliquemusic]

One of the most traditional Brazilian rock groups, Paralamas do Sucesso began playing together in the early 80 in Brasilia. The band maintained a constant production records and successes, raising some controversial as the song "Luis Inacio (300 picks)," which criticized the Congress. Other hits are "The New", "Mute Cinema", "It is I," "Lourinha Bombril", "The Alley", "Let's Hit Lata" and the ballads "Lantern of the Drowned" and "Almost One Second". They performed in European festivals and are one of the most popular bands in Argentina. In 2001, already preparing to record a new album, Herbert Vianna suffers a tragic accident. The fall of the ultralight in Angra dos Reis bay when he was on his way to Dado Villa Lobos house killed his wife, Lucy Needham Vianna and left him between life and death.
