A história do reggae africano com certeza não seria a mesma sem Alpha Blondy. Ele é considerado uma espécie de Bob Marley afro, com discursos contra o Apartheid e as brigas tribais que dominam o continente. Nascido em Seydou Kone na Costa do Marfim, Blondy iniciou sua carreira como vocalista da banda de rock Atomic Vibrations. Bandeou-se para o lado do reggae após ouvir Bob Marley & The Wailers. Blondy gravou alguns singles na Jamaica, que não obtiveram sucesso esperado. Trabalhou como tradutor na TV inglesa e iniciou sua carreira de glórias com o álbum Cocody Rock (1984). Três anos depois, lançou sua obra-prima, Jerusalém. Gravado com os Wailers, o disco tem mensagens religiosas e sociais da melhor qualidade, cantadas em inglês, francês, hebraico e no dialeto africano dioula. Ao mesmo tempo em que constrói uma obra de respeito, Blondy sofre de sérios problemas psicológicos em decorrência do uso de drogas pesadas. Three years later he released his masterpiece, Jerusalem.
