Nascido em Salvador, Álvaro Assmar manifestou sua inclinação para a música aos 6 anos de idade, quando viu os Beatles pela primeira vez na televisão. Em paralelo, acontecia a “Jovem Guarda” trazendo Renato e seus Blue Caps como representantes dos Beatles no Brasil, além de Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos e todos os demais artistas que compunham um movimento cultural de grande importância para a música brasileira. Tudo isto serviu como iniciação do aprendizado de Álvaro Assmar, que deu os primeiros passos num instrumento de brinquedo dado por uma tia (cavaquinho de Copacabana da Estrela). O primeiro violão, foi dado de presente pelo seu avô paterno aos 8 anos de idade e neste instrumento foi desenvolvida toda a técnica de solos mais apropriada para a guitarra do que o violão: era a influência predominantemente dos Beatles, Stones, Eric Clapton, Hendrix e do blues que vinha subscrito nestas tendências. A partir de Hendrix, Álvaro Assmar sentiu a necessidade de explorar outros territórios desconhecidos por ele até então: Cream, Allman Brothers, Mountain, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Yes, John Mayall, Buddy Guy e muitos outros grandes músicos que traziam o blues como matéria prima de sua arte. Aos 17 anos ganhou sua primeira guitarra e juntamente com seu irmão (Adelmo Assmar) formou o primeiro grupo de rock para apresentações em festivais de música do Colégio Maristas (Salvador) onde passou a ter contato com o palco, platéia e tudo que é preciso para o desenvolvimento de um artista. Por um acidente de percurso, acabou enveredando para a engenharia civil, formando-se em 1984 pela UCSAL mas a partir de 1985, retomou a música de forma profissionalizada integrando o “Cabo de Guerra” , banda de rock que misturava todas as vertentes conhecidas até então, ficando no grupo até 1992. Em paralelo à isto Álvaro Assmar criava a banda “Blues Anônimo”, um power trio composto pelos ex-integrantes do grupo “Mar Revolto” Octávio Américo e Raul C. Gomes e que foi o primeiro grupo baiano de blues a ser criado. O grupo atuou até 1994, quando Álvaro Assmar resolveu assinar seu próprio trabalho. No mesmo ano grava nos Estúdios Tapwin’ o álbum de estréia intitulado de “Standards”, que é lançado em março de 1995. Em 1998 durante um concerto no Teatro ACBEU (Salvador) com o bluesman gaúcho Solon Fishbone é registrado pela televisão o que viria a se tornar no ano seguinte o seu 2º álbum intitulado de “Live”. Ainda neste mesmo ano, Álvaro Assmar resolve criar o projeto Wednesday Blues, que trouxe a Salvador entre 1999 e 2003, os nomes de maior expressão da cena blues brasileira. Neste mesmo ano Álvaro Assmar assina contrato com a Top Cat Brasil, gravadora especializada em blues, subsidiária da Top Cat Records do Texas (EUA). Em agosto de 2001, Álvaro Assmar lança “Special Moment”, onde assina todas as composições pela primeira vez e uma canção (Welcome my friend) em parceria com o amigo André Christovam, trazendo ainda como convidado especial, o seu filho caçula Eric Assmar executando um belo solo de “slide guitar” com apenas 13 anos de idade. Em “Special Moment”, Álvaro Assmar se evidencia principalmente pela técnica de “slide guitar” que o coloca segundo a crítica especializada, como um dos mais importantes guitarristas da música nacional.
