Grupo carioca formado em 1976 com repertório baseado na música funk misturada com samba e jazz, com forte acento dançante. Gravou três discos ("Maria Fumaça", "Saci Pererê" e "Gafieira Universal") que fizeram sucesso nas pistas de dança. Além de composições próprias, a Banda Black Rio gravou suas versões para músicas como "Na Baixa do Sapateiro" (Ary Barroso), "Casa Forte" (Edu Lobo). Comparada a outros conjuntos de soul-funk estrangeiros como Kool And The Gang e Earth, Wind And Fire, a Black Rio desenvolveu a soul music instrumental brasileira e acabou virando objeto de culto nas pistas de dança da Inglaterra no fim dos anos 90.
