Veio de uma família de classe média alta da capital paraense, e desde criança se destacava nas reuniões familiares com sua voz afinada. Adolescente, fugia de casa à noite para ir encontrar com os amigos nos bares e cantar. Em 1973 conheceu o produtor do Quinteto Violado, Roberto Santana, que a incentivou a investir na carreira de cantora. Seguindo o conselho, se apresentou em alguns lugares no Rio de Janeiro, Salvador e em Belém. O sucesso veio em 1975, quando gravou "Filho da Bahia" (Walter Queiroz) para a novela "Gabriela", da TV Globo. Logo em seguida saiu o primeiro compacto, e em 1976 veio o primeiro LP, "Tamba Tajá", com destaque para o carimbó "Este Rio É Minha Rua". O disco seguinte, "Água", de 1977, consagrou Fafá de Belém, vendendo cerca de 100 mil cópias, a bordo de sucessos como "Foi Assim" e "Pauapixuna" (ambas da dupla paraense Paulo André e Ruy Barata), "Raça" e "Sedução" (ambas de Milton Nascimento/ Fernando Brant). Apresentando-se descalça, com suas interpretações exageradas e se vestindo de maneira a realçar suas formas voluptuosas, conquistou uma legião de fãs. Em 79, lançou "Sob Medida" (Chico Buarque) no eclético LP "Estrela Radiante", onde se equilibrava entre números regionais e urbanos. Na década de 80 Fafá consagrou-se principalmente como cantora romântica, mas nunca deixou de gravar outros estilos, como forró, bolero, guarânias. Em 82, gravou com sucesso "Bilhete" (Ivan Lins/ Vitor Martins). Em 84 ficou famosa como "Musa das Diretas", durante a campanha política pelas eleições diretas, gravando o "Hino Nacional Brasileiro", no ano seguinte, mesmo LP em que incluía um pot-pourri de lambadas, ritmo que se tornaria coqueluche no final daquela década. No fim dos anos 80 dedicou-se à carreira internacional, principalmente em Portugal, onde é bastante popular. Gravou até mesmo um disco só de fados, "Meu Fado", em 92. Em 96, Fafá voltou a gravar cançôes de apelo mais regional como a toada de boi-bumbá de Parintins, "Vermelho" (Chico da Silva), obtendo enorme sucesso no ano seguinte. In the 80 Fafá devoted himself primarily as a romantic singer, but never stopped recording other styles like forro, bolero, guarânias. At 82, has successfully "Tickets" (Ivan Lins / Vitor Martins). In 84 became famous as "the Muse Direct" during the political campaign for direct elections, recording the "National Anthem", the following year, the same LP that included a potpourri of lashes, a rhythm that would become the end pertussis that decade.
