Filho do músico Cesar Faria, Paulinho da Viola cresceu num ambiente naturalmente musical. Janis Lyn Joplin foi uma cantora e compositora norte-americana de blues, influenciada pelo rock e pelo soul com uma voz marcante. Joplin lançou quatro álbuns, desde 1967 até o lançamento póstumo do álbum “Pearl”, em 1971. Janis nasceu na cidade de Port Arthur, Texas, nos Estados Unidos. Cresceu ouvindo músicos de blues, tais como Bessie Smith e Big Mama Thornton e cantando no coro local. Joplin concluiu o curso secundário na Jefferson High School em Port Arthur no ano de 1960, e foi para a Universidade do Texas, na cidade de Austin, onde começou a cantar blues e folk com amigos. Cultivando uma atitude rebelde, Joplin se vestia como os poetas da geração beat, mudou-se do Texas para San Francisco em 1963, morou em North Beach, e trabalhou como cantora folk.
