Manoel Salustiano Soares - o “Mestre Salu” nasceu no dia 12 de novembro de 1945, no Engenho Oiteiro Alto, Cidade de Aliança, Zona da Mata Norte de Pernambuco. Filho de Dona Maria Tertonila da Conceição e Seu João Salustiano Soares, rabequeiro respeitado na mesma região, Mestre Salu teve uma infância muito sofrida no campo, cortando cana, limpando mato, carreando, cambitando, lá no engenho. Sempre lutava toda semana no campo e no fim-de-semana tinha preocupação de ir para os espetáculos populares como Cavalo Marinho e Mamulengo, Ciranda e Maracatu. Pai de quinze filhos de nove mulheres, Mestre Salu mantém a tradição de repassar para os seus filhos a essência da arte, os ensinamentos recebidos do seu pai. Garboso, relata que recebeu a orientação de nove mestres de diferentes brincadeiras: Ciranda, Cavalo Marinho e Maracatu. Certamente, foi a influência dessas pessoas que fez de Mestre Salustiano um artista diversificado, com conhecimento e criatividade para renovar e inovar as brincadeiras. Mestre Salustiano conseguiu por si só transformar o terreiro de chão batido em palco de grandes espetáculos, e diferentes espetáculos, ora iluminados com a luz do candeeiro, ora iluminados com o clarão de refletores. No interior, na capital, em outros estados e países: Cuba, Estados Unidos, Bolívia, França… Lugares diferentes, com espetáculos diferentes, e com artistas iguais, basicamente da mesma origem, que tanto engolem a fumaça quente dos solos saturados da cana-de-açúcar, como respiram a fictícia fumaça de gelo seco nas grandes capitais. Em agosto de 2008, Pernambuco perde um grande Artista da cultura popular: mestre Salustiano que levou para todo o mundo o som da sua rabeca encantada e comandou o baque solto dos maracatus, e levou junto consigo boa parte da cultura pernambucana. Começou a tocar violão aos doze anos, incentivado por uma família cheia de músicos; alguns anos depois, começa a cursar Faculdade de Metalurgia em Ouro Preto. Apesar de não deixar de lado os estudos, dedica-se à carreira musical, influenciado principalmente pelos gêneros jazz, bossa nova e tropicalismo. A primeira gravação saiu no disco de bolso do jornal O Pasquim: Agnus Dei (1972). No ano seguinte, assinou com a gravadora RCA, quando lançou o primeiro disco, que levava apenas seu nome. Em 1967 conheceu Vinicius de Moraes com o qual compôs as seguintes canções: Rosa dos ventos, Samba do Pouso e O mergulhador, dentre outras. Em 1970 conheceu aquele que viria a ser o mais freqüente parceiro, com quem compôs mais de uma centena de canções: Aldir Blanc, O mestre sala dos mares, O bêbado e a equilibrista, Bala com bala, Kid cavaquinho, Caça à raposa, Falso brilhante, O rancho da goiabada, De frente pro crime, Fantasia, Bodas de prata, Latin Lover, O ronco da cuíca, Corsário, dentre muitas outras.
