New Model Army é uma banda cultuada na Inglaterra, e é considerado um dos melhores grupos que o pós-punk inglês já produziu. Combinando a força do punk rock com letras politizadas, a exemplo do que o U2 e o The Alarm faziam, e o folk rock de protesto de Billy Bragg, o New Model Army soava como poucas bandas surgidas na mesma época e no mesmo estilo. O som era aguerrido e preciso, mas aos poucos foi esmorecendo, sem perder a qualidade, dando lugar para violões, violinos e harmônicas, deixando um pouco o punk de lado e caminhando mais a fundo na seara folk, misturando letras políticas, muitas vezes vistas como esquerdistas e anti-Thatcher (Margareth Thatcher, primeira-ministra britânica na década de oitenta), com momentos de introspecção. Mesmo sendo aclamado por público e crítica, a banda nunca conseguiu chegar aos postos mais altos das paradas inglesas, e, infelizmente, sempre foi ignorada nos Estados Unidos. O New Model Army foi formado em Bradford em 1980 e seu nome foi tirado de Oliver Cromwell, cidadão que lutou contra a monarquia no meio do século 17. A banda foi criada pelo guitarrista e vocalista Justin Sullivan, que era chamado de Slade the Leveller, uma referência aos Levellers, uma facção democrática radical, associada à Cromwell. Combining punk rock strength with politicized lyrics, like the U2 and The Alarm did, and Billy Bragg protest folk rock, the New Model Army sounded like few bands that emerged at the same time and in the same style. The sound was embattled and accurate, but was gradually fading without losing quality, leading to guitars, violins and harmonicas, leaving a little side of punk and walking deeper into the harvest folk, mixing political lyrics, often viewed as leftists and anti-Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher, British Prime Minister in the eighties), with moments of introspection.
