O Grupo Cultural AfroReggae é uma organização não governamental fundada em 1993 com a missão de promover a inclusão e a justiça social por meio da arte, da cultura afro-brasileira e da educação. O grupo tem como um dos principais objetivos despertar potencialidades artísticas de jovens das camadas populares. A iniciativa aumenta a autoestima dos jovens moradores de favelas, além de gerar renda, afastando-os da influência do tráfico. Luiz Fernando Lopes, mais conhecido como Tekko Rastafari e José Pereira de Oliveira Junior foram os primeiros a acreditar na ideia de formar a organização e dar os passos iniciais. José Junior começou sua carreira promovendo festas de funk e reggae no Centro do Rio de Janeiro, o que despertou seu talento nato como empreendedor social. Com o surgimento do jornal impresso Afro Reggae Notícias, a vontade de descriminalizar as ruas e difundir a cultura afro se consolidou e em 28 de setembro de 1993, um mês após a chacina de Vigário Geral, começou um trabalho que deu início a uma nova forma de educação e inclusão da favela como parte da cidade. E foi justamente na favela de Vigário Geral, na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, em que a ONG iniciou o seu trabalho e inaugurou seu primeiro Núcleo Comunitário de Cultura, o Centro Cultural Waly Salomão. Inicialmente, o grupo passou a oferecer oficinas de reciclagem de lixo, percussão e de dança afro dentro da favela. O trabalho da instituição se expandiu e alcançou os moradores das favelas de Parada de Lucas, Cantagalo, complexo de favelas do Alemão, da Penha e outros municípios como Nova Iguaçu (RJ). O AfroReggae, durante toda a sua história tem desenvolvido projetos em áreas pobres, violentas e muitas vezes comandadas pelo tráfico de drogas. A exclusão e as diversas privações sociais podem fazer de crianças e jovens vítimas fáceis para contruibuir com a criminalidade. O AfroReggae existe para transformar a dura realidade que essas crianças e jovens estão submetidos nas favelas da cidade - sem direitos, sem oportunidades e sem futuro. Além da atuação nos núcleos, por meio de oficinas, aulas, eventos, entre outros, o grupo também trabalha na formação de grupos artísticos, desenvolve projetos, programas de televisão, publicações sobre temáticas sociais, entre outros. Em 2013, comemorando os 20 anos de trabalho, o AfroReggae abriu a primeira sede fora do Rio de Janeiro, um escritório de representação em São Paulo. Além disso, expande sua metodologia de trabalho social pelo mundo todo. As oficinas do AfroReggae já foram multiplicadas em países como a Índia, Colômbia, China, Inglaterra, França e em Cabo Verde, na África, a convite da ONU. Atualmente, existe também o Selo AR, uma iniciativa do AfroReggae que funciona como um licenciamento, uma etiqueta, mas com objetivos muito mais profundos: ela identifica empresas comprometidas com a transformação social.
