As origens do Nazareth remontam a 1961, ano em que Pete Agnew fundou o "The Shadettes". A primeira formação deste grupo foi: Pete Agnew (guitarra e vocal), Brian 'Pye' Brady (guitarra), Alfie Murray (guitarra), Alan Fraser (bateria) e Bobby Spence (baixo). Em 1968, dois acontecimentos muito importantes na história da banda: o ingresso do lendário guitarrista Manny Charlton e a mudança do nome para Nazareth.
