Um dos mais renomados artistas representantes da musicalidade sulista, costuma apresenta-se no Brasil, em festivais e festas do Sul e, com o mesmo sucesso, em festas juninas no Nordeste, e em concertos em teatros de diversas capitais, inclusive o Teatro Amazonas, além de apresentacões no exterior, em cidades como Munique e Stuttgart, entre outras. Aos 16 anos, subiu pela primeira vez em um palco profissionalmente, passando, a partir de então, a participar de diversos festivais de música. Foi nos festivais que começou a chamar a atenção do público e da crítica para a sua música. Tornou-se rapidamente popular, tanto pela sua música, como pelo seu jeito de se vestir, com cabelos longos, chapéu encobrindo os olhos, bombachas surradas e alpargatas de corda. Em 1984, lançou seu primeiro disco, que inicialmente seria um trabalho independente e para isso, Borghetinho, como também é chamado, alugou o estúdio Eger e convidou os músicos Ênio Rodrigues, Oscar Soares e Francisco Castilhos para participarem da gravação que teria 2.000 cópias. O produtor Ayrton dos Anjos, porém, levou a fita para a RBS Discos e esta lançou o disco, que rapidamente tornou-se um fenômeno de sucesso. Em três semanas o disco vendeu 60 mil cópias, um recorde absoluto no Rio Grande do Sul. Com rapidez, o disco atingiu a marca de 100 mil cópias vendidas, dando a Borghett o disco de ouro, o primeiro para um disco instrumental no Brasil, e o primeiro para a música nativista gaúcha. Destacaram-se no primeiro disco, as composições "Milonga para as missões", de Gilberto Monteiro, "Minuano", de Sadi Cabral e "Tio Bila no oito baixos", de Tio Bila. O disco foi posteriormente lançado em CD e atingiu a marca de 250 mil cópias, alcançando o disco de platina. Alternando trabalhos mais simples e gauchescos com momentos de maior sofisticação, passando inclusive peo jazz e a música erudita, Borghetinho já na década de 80, depois de ganhar incontáveis prêmios em festivais, tocou com artistas como Leon Russel e Edgar Winter, Na década de 1990 tocou no S.O.B.'s de Nova York estabelecendo parceria com a Orquestra de Câmara do Teatro São Pedro, que logo geraria novos trabalhos nessa fronteira erudito-folclórica com a OSPA (Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre), a Orquestra Unisinos e orquestras de todo o Brasil. Em 1991, recebeu prêmio da Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte pelo melhor disco do ano na categoria Regional e convite para integrar o Projeto Asa Branca, pelo qual fez shows por toda a década, ao lado de Sivuca, Dominguinhos, Elba Ramalho, Alceu Valença entre outros. Apresentou-se ao lado de importantes nomes da música brasileira e internacional, entre os quais, Luiz Gonzaga, Kleiton e Kledir, Adriana Calcanhoto, Stephane Grapelli e Ron Carter. Sua música tem como base o folclore gaúcho, misturando as influências trazidas por imigrantes portugueses, espanhóis, alemães e italianos.
