A banda surgiu em 1992 em Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil. John Ulhoa (guitarras, programações, vocais), Fernanda Takai (vocais, violão) e Ricardo Koctus (baixo, vocais) era sua formação inicial como um trio com bases eletrônicas. O grupo passou a chamar a atenção da cena local e nacional com shows onde a diversão era a principal. Ao mesmo tempo, começaram a distribuir sua primeira demo tape, que foi logo ganhando resenhas entusiasmadas nos zines especializados de música. O primeiro lançamento, Rotomusic de Liquidificapum, aconteceu em 1993 pela Cogumelo Records, selo independente que era parte da forte cena do metal mineiro, tendo no Sepultura seu principal artista. Mas o que o Pato Fu fazia ia bem além desse segmento. Sua diversidade de sons e ideias acabou os levando a assinar com a major BMG, onde ficaram por 10 anos. Gol de Quem? o primeiro álbum por essa gravadora é considerado um disco fundamental do rock brasileiro dos anos 90. Foram muitos prêmios por videoclipes na MTV Brasil, dois Discos de Ouro (Televisão de Cachorro e Isopor) e várias canções tocando muito nas rádios. A banda se apresentou em grandes festivais como Hollywood Rock (abrindo para The Cure e Smashing Pumpkins), Rock In Rio 3 (na mesma noite de Oasis e Guns´n´Roses) e vários outros importantes eventos locais. Em 2001, tiveram a experiência de mixar e finalizar o álbum Ruído Rosa em Londres. Desde 2005 tem lançado seus discos pelo próprio selo Rotomusic, produzidos, gravados e mixados no estúdio que John Ulhoa tem em sua casa. O Pato Fu já se apresentou no Japão, Portugal, Inglaterra e Estados Unidos e tem sido reconhecido como uma das mais inventivas bandas brasileiras dos últimos tempos. Em 2001, a Time Magazine colocou o grupo numa lista das 10 melhores bandas do mundo, junto com Radiohead, U2, Aterciopelados entre outros…O álbum “Música de Brinquedo”, foi um dos lançamentos mais esperados no mercado brasileiro em 2010.
