Lee começou a tocar profissionalmente em 1962, em uma banda chamada os Jaybirds, que desfrutaram de popularidade em sua Inglaterra natal, mas mudou-se para buscar uma fan-base mais ampla. Lá, com Alvin Lee assumiu o papel de vocalista permanente, além de guitarrista, eles começaram a construir uma sequência. A banda garantiu uma residência no Marquee Club, e um convite para o Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival, em 1967, que levou a seu primeiro contrato de gravação. The film brought the music of Lee to a worldwide audience, though he later lamented that he missed the lost freedom and spiritual dedication to his audience earlier.
