Catedral é uma banda de pop rock formada no Rio de Janeiro em 1987. Começou no mercado gospel e se tornou o grupo mais famoso do segmento. Em 1999 mudou-se para o mercado não religioso. A banda foi formada inicialmente pelos três irmãos Kim, Júlio Cézar e Cézar junto com mais dois amigos, Guilherme Morgado e Glauco Mozart, esse último integrante da banda até o terceiro LP (Catedral III). Tiveram sua origem na igreja, tendo sua temática voltada totalmente para o mercado gospel. Com menos de um ano de formada, e Júlio tendo apenas 16 anos, lançaram Você pela gravadora Pioneira Evangélica, de Guilherme, que alcançou o disco de ouro vendendo 100.000 cópias. Ao longo dos anos o álbum vendeu cerca de 300.000 cópias, mostrando o potencial da banda. Em 1989 lançaram "Aos Ouvidos dos Sensíveis de Coração" pela gravadora Doce Harmonia, dessa vez já mostrando muito mais ousadia em suas letras, demonstrando seu descontentamento com as injustiças desse mundo, explicito principalmente na faixa que fecha o trabalho, Mundo Vazio, o álbum vendeu aproximadamente 100.000 cópias. Dois anos após a banda voltou a gravar pela Pioneira Evangélica, e lançou seu terceiro trabalho Catedral III, alcançando o disco de platina e ouro com mais de 250.000 cópias vendidas. Em 1992 o Catedral grava seu primeiro álbum ao vivo, dando à banda seu terceiro disco de ouro e lançando-os definitivamente como a maior banda de rock gospel do Brasil, marcando a primeira apresentação da banda em uma grande casa (Canecão), este álbum intitulado “Catedral 5 anos” vendeu 100.000 cópias. Em 1994 o Catedral chega a MK Publicitá para ser o principal artista da maior gravadora gospel na época. No mesmo ano a banda lança seu primeiro álbum pela gravadora sendo o sexto na carreira. "Contra Todo Mal" mostra mais uma vez o lado político e critico da banda, com algumas canções trazendo letras fortes e reflexivas, voltadas ao social, como “Rio de Janeiro a Dezembro”, que demonstra a indignação da banda com a violência na cidade maravilhosa, ou então a música “Sempre Comigo” que chegou a fazer parte da colentânea da MK Publicitá, Louvor de todos nós, em que a banda mostra seu estilo mais “Gospel tradicional”. Em 1995 a banda lançou seu primeiro grande sucesso pela MK, "O Sentido", alcançado mais uma vez a marca de 250.000 cópias vendidas, mostrando seu lado popular mesmo estando dentro do mercado gospel. No ano seguinte o Catedral lança mais um álbum muito bem sucedido, "Eterno", com músicas românticas, sem deixar de mostrar o lado rock da banda. Em 1997, a banda lançou seu segundo álbum ao vivo, desta vez com muito mais estrutura. A obra conta com um momento acústico e outro elétrico. Este álbum vendeu quase 300.000 cópias. Já em 1998 a banda lança o álbum en español, voltado para o mercado latino, um trabalho bastante sucedido nas rádios da América do Sul, principalmente na Argentina. Ainda em 1998 o Catedral encerra sua marcante presença na MK Publicitá com o álbum "A Revolução" que vendeu cerca de 200.000 cópias, o mais popular da banda dentro mercado gospel. Em 1999 a banda rompe mais uma barreira, retirando o rótulo “gospel” de sua música e assinando contrato com a multinacional Warner Music. Nesse mesmo ano a banda lança seu primeiro trabalho dentro do mercado secular, o Para todo mundo, nome bastante sugestivo para o momento que a banda vivia. Com o álbum a banda começa a escrever seu nome dentro do mercado popular, lançando dois videoclipes na MTV, sendo que ambos chegaram ao topo do Disk MTV. Em 2001 o Catedral lançou seu primeiro grande sucesso de vendas, "Mais Do Que Imaginei", e emplacou um de seus maiores hits, "Eu Amo Mais Você", videoclipe que deu a banda suas primeiras indicações ao VMB da MTV como Banda Revelação, e na principal categoria da premiação, a Escolha da Audiência, que conta com os videoclipes mais votados do ano. No começo de 2003 a banda lançou seu terceiro e último trabalho pela Warner Music Brasil, 15° Andar, mostrando o amadurecimento da banda, mesclando o rock com as baladas românticas. A obra rendeu ao Catedral mais dois videoclipes na MTV (Tchau e Um Minuto), esse último mostrando mais uma vez o lado social da banda, pois o videoclipe traz como tema principal as crianças desaparecidas em nosso país. Em 22 de julho de 2003 ficou marcado pelo dia no qual, em um fatídico acidente de carro, morre José Cézar Motta aos 33 anos. Foi o momento mais difícil para a banda, havendo dúvida se haveria forças para continuar. Posteriormente o Catedral voltou à ativa em meados de 2003 para lançar Ao Vivo 15 Anos - Acima do Nível do Mar, uma homenagem ao Cézar explicita na canção "A Tempestade e o Sol". Em fevereiroDE 2007, Kim vocalista da banda anunciou a contratação do Guitarrista Fred Nascimento (Ex- Legião Urbana e Capital Incial) e a participação especial do jovem tecladista Rafael Castilhol (já conhecido do meio artístico da MPB). Em janeiro de 2008, Kim anuncia, em seu blog, a criação de sua própria gravadora, a Carroussel Music, criada junto com o baixista Júlio. On July 22, 2003 was marked by the day on which , in a fateful car accident dies Cezar Joseph Motta after 33 years. Was the most difficult moment for the band , there would be no doubt if the strength to continue . Later the Cathedral returned to active duty in mid-2003 to launch Live 15 Years - Above Sea Level , a tribute to Cezar explicit in the song " The Storm and the Sun " . In FEBRUARY 2007 Kim frontman announced the signing of guitarist Fred Birth ( Former Keith Urban and Initial Capital ) and special participation of young keyboardist Rafael Castilhol ( known artistic means MPB ) .
