Começou a tocar violão na infância, em São Paulo, estudando com professores consagrados de clássico e popular e incorporando lições de harmonia e orquestração. Nos anos 60 começa a se apresentar ao lado de Chico Buarque, Taiguara, Sérgio Ricardo e outros. O primeiro compacto é gravado em 1964, com "Primavera" (C. Lyra/ V. Moraes) e "Só Tinha de Ser com Você" (Jobim/ A. de Oliveira). No ano seguinte, no Rio de Janeiro, trabalhou como violonista, acompanhando cantores, e musicou peças de teatro. Gravou um LP ("O Violão de Toquinho", 1966) e em 1969 foi para a Itália, onde passou seis meses e se apresentou com Chico Buarque e Josephine Baker. De volta ao Brasil gravou o segundo LP pela RGE, que inclui "Que Maravilha", parceria com Jorge Ben Jor. Nos anos 70 sua parceria com Vinicius de Moraes se consolidou, gerando cerca de 120 músicas, entre elas "Tarde em Itapoã" e "Regra Três". Toquinho gravou vários discos, entre os quais o antológico "Tom, Vinicius, Toquinho e Miúcha", gravado ao vivo em um show no Canecão, no Rio, e participou de diversos projetos no Brasil, América Latina, Europa e Japão.
