Roy Buchanan nasceu em 1939 no estado do Arkansas, EUA, mas cresceu na Califórnia. Ele foi um dos grandes guitarristas de blues/rock, dono de um estilo próprio de tocar, criava gritos harmônicos altos peculiares na sua Telecaster. Roy comprou sua primeira guitarra em 1953 e passou a estudar o blues dos grandes guitarristas da época. Nos anos 60 tocou com diversos artistas e, no final da década, montou sua própria banda. Na década de 70 assinou contrato com grandes gravadoras (Polydor e Atlantic) e, apesar do relativo sucesso e reconhecimento de crítica, era insatisfeito com relação a sua liberdade de criação. Desiludido e se sentindo pressionado pelas grandes companhias, resolveu se retirar da música em 1981 dizendo que só voltaria a gravar quando pudesse compor o que bem entendesse. Essa liberdade foi encontrada no selo Alligator, com quem assinou contrato em 1984 e lançou seu primeiro álbum pela gravadora em 1985. "When a Guitar Plays The Blues" foi seu primeiro disco puramente de blues, aclamado por crítica e público. Em 1986 lançou "Dancing On The Edge" com alguns convidados especiais. Em 1987 saiu seu último disco, "Hot Wires". Ele disse na época: "Desde que vim para Alligator estou fazendo o que sempre quis, finalmente". Quando tudo parecia perfeito, Roy foi preso embriagado após uma discussão familiar. Na manhã seguinte, dia 14 de agosto de 1988, foi encontrado morto na cela, enforcado na própria camisa. Roy Buchanan was born in 1939 in Arkansas, USA, but grew up in California. He was one of the great guitarists of blues / rock, who owns his own style of playing, creating unique high harmonic noise in his Telecaster. Roy bought his first guitar in 1953 and went on to study the blues of the great guitarists of the time. In the '60s he played with various artists and at the end of the decade, set up his own band. In the 70s signed to major labels (Polydor and Atlantic) and, despite the relative success and critical recognition, it was dissatisfied with regard to their freedom of creation. Disillusioned and feeling pressured by large companies, decided to retire from music in 1981 saying they would only return the record when he could write whatever they wanted. This freedom was found in the Alligator label, who signed a contract in 1984 and released their first album by the label in 1985. "When a Guitar Plays The Blues" was their first album purely blues, acclaimed by critics and audiences. In 1986 he released "Dancing On The Edge" with some special guests. In 1987 came his latest album, "Hot Wires". He said at the time: "Since coming to Alligator'm doing what I always wanted, finally." When everything seemed perfect, Roy was arrested drunk after a family argument. The next morning, the 14th of August 1988, was found dead in his cell, hung on his own shirt.
