Slayer é uma banda de thrash metal formada nos Estados Unidos da América. Começou a ser formada em 1981 pelos guitarristas Kerry King e Jeff Hanneman, que juntos a Tom Araya, baixista, e ao baterista Dave Lombardo, fundaram o que seria uma das bandas pioneiras no thrash metal mundial. A origem de seu nome pode ser traduzida como “carrasco” ou “matador” ao contrário do que dizem, não foi baseado no filme chamado “Dragon Slayer”, o próprio Kerry King confirmou isto. Lançou seu primeiro álbum no ano de 1983, “Show No Mercy”. A banda é considerada umas das pioneiras do thrash metal, junto com Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus e Metallica. O Slayer costuma abordar em suas músicas temas como: violência, satanismo, anti-religião, morte. Algumas pessoas podem, pela temática e peso, considerá-la uma banda de black metal ou até mesmo de death metal. Mas a definição mais coerente é mesmo thrash metal, pois coloca lado a lado estilos como o hardcore e o metal, fazendo um estilo tirando proveito do crossover que pode ser feito no mundo musical. O Slayer foi formado em 1981, quando o guitarrista Kerry King se uniu a Jeff Hanneman enquanto fazia audição para uma banda. Os dois recrutaram o baixista e vocalista Tom Araya, que havia tocado com King em uma banda anterior. O baterista Dave Lombardo foi recrutado quando ele conheceu King entregando uma pizza. A banda tocou versões cover de canções do Iron Maiden e do Judas Priest, em clubes e festas no sul da Califórnia. Inicialmente, os shows baseavam-se em uma imagem satânica, que incluía pentagramas, maquiagem, espinhos e cruzes invertidas. Combining the savings of Araya (who was employed as a respiratory therapist) with money borrowed King's father, the band entered the studio in November 1983.
