O Saxon é uma das mais relevantes bandas de heavy metal do mundo, sendo ao lado do Iron Maiden a mais longeva banda da chamada NWOBHM, o movimento cultural furioso inglês que é, junto com as grandes bandas dos anos 60, a base do rock pesado na atualidade. Influência poderosa entre grande parte dos músicos do estilo, com seu som emblemático e suas letras, verdadeiros slogans do Metal, o Saxon cativa fans desde sua fundação até hoje, sendo considerada uma das bandas mais fiéis ao som original, e com uma “torcida organizada” quase tão fanática quanto o Manowar. De fato, talvez esta banda reúna um conjunto de atributos tão formidável, que possa ser considerada como uma das maiores representantes da NWOBHM. Foi na região de South Yorkshire (Inglaterra) onde surgiu em 1976 a banda Son Of A Bitch. Esta banda, formada por Graham Oliver e Steve Dawson, incorporou alguns integrantes de uma outra banda local, o Coast, que trazia Biff Byford no vocal e Paul Quinn na guitarra. Com essa formação a banda mudou o seu nome, passando a chamar-se apenas Saxon. A banda, que se apresentava em diversos clubes e pubs na Inglaterra, teve algumas composições lançadas em demo-tapes, as quais foram utilizadas por um novo selo que surgia na época, o Carrere Records. Já contratado, o Saxon preparou um álbum auto-intitulado, lançado no primeiro semestre de 1979. O primeiro single “Big Teaser”, mas o B-side deste single alcançou ótimos resultados na parada britânica, chegando a ficar por algum tempo em primeiro lugar: “Stallions of the Highway”. A banda também lançou outros dois singles, que ajudaram a promover a turnê que faziam ao lado do Motorhead, tocando inclusive por três noites seguidas na famosa casa de shows inglesa Hammersmith Odeon. Em 1983 a banda deixou o selo Carrere, por problemas de vendagens e de imediato assinou com a major EMI. O novo álbum, lançado em 1984, “Crusader”, é considerado por muitos o melhor álbum de toda a carreira da banda.
