Devo é um grupo americano de rock formado em 1974. A banda foi fundada por Gerald Casale e Mark Mothersbaugh, na época estudantes da Kent State University, fazendo um sucesso estrondoso nos anos 80 com a explosão do new wave. A canção "Whip It" de 1980 sobre o governo de Jimmy Carter teve seu tema confundido com masturbação e por esse motivo atingiu considerável sucesso nas paradas americanas. A banda mais tarde ganhou parte de sua fama inicial ao ter a música Turnaround regravada pelo Nirvana. Seu estilo foi classificado como punk rock, pós-punk ou art rock, mas são geralmente classificados como new wave ou synth pop. A música e o estilo do grupo tematiza a ficção científica kitsch, com toques de humor surrealista, via instrumentação minimalista e sintética. O som da banda influenciou tanto o new wave da época quanto os grupos de rock alternativo de hoje, além de vídeo clipes memoráveis. A banda chamou atenção por formar um conceito, a de-volução, em que seus integrantes acreditavam que a raça humana havia chegado a seu ápice, e estava "de-evoluindo", voltando a idade das cavernas. The song "Whip It" from 1980 on the administration of Jimmy Carter had his theme confused with masturbation and therefore achieved considerable success in the U.S. charts. The band later gained part of its initial fame to be rewritten Turnaround song by Nirvana. His style has been classified as punk rock, post-punk or rock art, but are generally classified as new wave and synth pop. The music and style of the group studies the kitsch science fiction, with touches of humor surrealist, minimalist route and synthetic instrumentation.
