Nascido em Buffalo, Nova York, foi cercado por música desde a infância e aos oito anos de seu pai lhe deu um saxofone. Durante o serviço militar ele conheceu Billy Cobham que o apresentou a outros músicos em Nova York, no início de 1970, trabalhando nos dois primeiros álbuns para Prestige Records Leon Spencer, juntamente com Idris Muhammad e Melvin Sparks. Sua grande chance veio quando o sax Hank Crawford não apareceu para gravar com Kudu Records, a gravadora do Creed Taylor. A sessão de gravação deu-lhe a oportunidade de gravar o seu primeiro álbum, Inner City Blues, tornando-se um músico profissional. Embora conhecido entre os músicos de jazz, o seu quarto álbum, o Mister Magic (1974), teve um reconhecimento comercial. O álbum alcançou a posição número 10 na Billboard Top 40 ea faixa-título alcançou a posição 16 nas paradas de R & B e posição 54 nas paradas de sucesso. His big break came when the sax Hank Crawford did not appear to record with Kudu Records, the label of Creed Taylor. The recording session gave him the opportunity to record their first album, Inner City Blues, becoming a professional musician. Although known among jazz musicians, their fourth album, Mister Magic (1974), had a commercial recognition. The album reached number 10 on the Billboard Top 40 and the title track peaked at 16 on the R & B charts and position 54 on the charts. His next album, Feels So Good (1975) also reached number 10. His album Winelight (1980), which includes a collaboration with Bill Withers, "Just The Two of Us", was classified as platinum disc in 1981 and won two awards Grammy in 1982 (Best R & B Song for "Just the Two of Us" and Best Jazz Performance of merger "Winelight").
