Formado em 1989 e inspirado pelos Stones Roses, o The Charlatans tinha o tecladista Rob Collins, o guitarrista Jon Baker, o baixista Martin Blunt e o baterista Jon Brookes, mas não haviam encontrado um vocalista. Depois de vários testes, Tim Burguess assumiu o microfone. Em 1990 lançaram o primeiro single, Indian Rope, pelo selo Dead Dead Good Records. O que diferenciava o grupo, dos demais de Manchester, era o estilo dos teclados usados por Collins, fazendo com que Indian Rope chegasse ao primeiro posto das paradas indies. Com o sucesso da canção assinam com a Beggars Banquet, por onde lançam The Only One I Know, poucos meses depois. Pela mesma Beggars Banquet lançam mais um single, Then, antes de sair o primeiro álbum do grupo, Some Friendly, que também bateu no posto mais alto das paradas britânicas. Mas os problemas começaram a aparecer, logo na primeira turnê pelos Estados Unidos, foram forçados a colocar o U.K. no final do nome, já que uma banda americana, dos anos 60, havia registrado o nome Charlatans por lá. Quando voltam para a Inglaterra, o guitarrista Jon Baker anuncia que está deixando a banda. Em seu lugar entra Mark Collins. Mais problemas, antes de começarem a gravar um novo disco, o baixista Martin Blunt, entra em depressão e precisa de tratamento. Com tantos problemas, quando conseguem terminar as gravações de Between 10th & 11th, o movimento Madchester já havia perdido a atração e o público simplesmente ignorou o novo álbum. Apesar da perda de popularidade a banda continuou firme. Up to Our Lips recebeu ótimas críticas e o primeiro single do trabalho, Can´t Get Out of Bed se transformou em um grande hit do Charlatans.
