Nasceu em Cambridge, Inglaterra e cresceu em Grantchester Meadows. A sua educação teve lugar na Waldorf School e foi durante muitos anos um modelo para essa escola, tendo no entanto descrito a sua educação como “horrível”. Gilmour conheceu Syd Barrett quando frequentava o Colégio de Artes e Tecnologia de Cambridge, embora não tenha pertencido á formação inicial dos Pink Floyd. O primeiro grupo de Gilmour chamava-se Joker’s Wild para quem começou a tocar em 1963. A banda mudou o seu nome para Flowers em 1967 tendo acabado nesse mesmo ano, tendo Gilmour formado os Bullitt. Juntou-se aos Pink Floyd em Janeiro do ano seguinte. Syd Barrett saiu do grupo alguns meses mais tarde tendo Gilmour assumindo o papel de guitarrista principal. Gilmour lançou o seu primeiro álbum, homônimo, na primavera de 1978. O seu segundo álbum, About Face, foi editado em 1984. Roger Waters deixou o Pink Floyd em 1985 assumindo que sem ele o Pink Floyd se desmembraria. Em vez disso, Gilmour assumiu o completo controle e criou “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. Gilmour explica: “Eu tinha um sem número de problemas com a direcção da banda no passado recente, antes de Roger sair. Eu achava que as músicas tinham muitas palavras, e que devido ao significado dessas palavras serem tão importantes, a música tinha-se tornado um mero veículo para as letras, o que não era muito inspirador…"The dark side of the moon" e "Wish you were here" tiveram um enorme sucesso, não apenas devido à contribuição de Roger, mas também porque havia um equilíbrio maior entre a música e as palavras do que em álbuns mais recentes. É isso que estou a tentar fazer em "A momentary lapse of reason" mais focado na música, restaurar o equilíbrio.” Em 2002 Gilmour fez uma série de concertos acústicos a solo em Londres e Paris, juntamente com uma pequena banda e coro, e que foi documentado na edição de David Gilmour in Concert. Durante os interregnos musicais do Pink Floyd, Gilmour passava o tempo tocando como músico de estúdio, produzindo discos e até fez de engenheiro de som de palco para uma enorme variedade de espectáculos incluindo, algumas novidades e Roy Harper, Kate Bush, The Dream Academy, Grace Jones, Arcadia, Bryan Ferry, Robert Wyatt, Hawkwind, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sam Brown, Jools Holland, Propaganda, Pete Townshend, The Who, Supertramp (juntos criaram o êxito “Brother where you bound” do álbum com o mesmo nome), vários “supergrupos” de solidariedade e muito mais. Não sendo um guitarrista rápido, Gilmour é no entanto considerado um dos melhores de sempre. É especialmente reconhecido por ter um estilo muito preciso de solar, bem como pelos sons tipo-violino. Foi um inovador no uso de efeitos sonoros na guitarra. Em 1996 Gilmour foi induzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame com os Pink Floyd. Gilmour met Syd Barrett while attending the College of Arts and Technology Cambridge, although it has not belonged will initial training of Pink Floyd. The first group Gilmour was called Joker's Wild for those who started playing in 1963. The band changed its name to Flowers in 1967 having finished in the same year, and Gilmour formed the Bullitt. He joined the Pink Floyd in January of the following year. Syd Barrett left the group a few months later with Gilmour assuming the role of lead guitarist. Gilmour released his first album, self-titled, in the spring of 1978. Their second album, About Face, was published in 1984. Roger Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985 assuming that without it the Pink Floyd dismember. Instead, Gilmour assumed full control and created "A Momentary Lapse of Reason." Gilmour said: "I had a number of problems with the direction of the band in the recent past, before Roger leave. I thought the songs were very wordy, and that due to the meaning of those words were so important, the music had become a mere vehicle for the lyrics, which was not very inspiring ... "The dark side of the moon" and "Wish you were here "had a huge success, not only because of Roger's contribution, but also because there was a better balance between the music and the words than in more recent albums. That's what I'm trying to do in "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" more focused on the music, restore the balance. "In 2002 Gilmour made a series of acoustic solo concerts in London and Paris, along with a small band and choir, and which was documented in the edition of David Gilmour in Concert. During the interregnum music of Pink Floyd, Gilmour spent time playing as a studio musician, producing discs and even made of stage sound engineer for a huge variety of shows including, some news and Roy Harper, Kate Bush, The Dream Academy Grace Jones, Arcadia, Bryan Ferry, Robert Wyatt, Hawkwind, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sam Brown, Jools Holland, Advertising, Pete Townshend, the Who, Supertramp (together created the hit "Brother where you bound" album with the same name), several "supergroups" of solidarity and more. Not being a fast guitar player, Gilmour is however one of the best ever. It is especially known for having a very precise solar style as well as by the sounds-like violin. Was an innovator in the use of sound effects on the guitar. In 1996 Gilmour was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Pink Floyd. In November 2003 he was awarded the OBE.
