Savatage é uma banda norte-americana de heavy metal fundada em Tampa, na Flórida, no final dos anos 70 com o nome de Avatar pelos irmãos Jon e Criss Oliva, do Metropolis. Em 1979, o baterista Steve Wacholz se junta à banda, e, após inúmeros baixista, o line-up estabiliza-se com Keith Collins. Após participar de algumas compliações, o Avatar lança de forma independente o EP City Beneath the Surface em 1982, mas abandona o nome para evitar futuros problemas legais. Assim, o Savatage inicia sua carreira seguindo uma linha mais tradicional, na veia do metal inglês, quando lança pela Par Records seus primeiros discos (Sirens, 1982, e o EP The Dungeons Are Calling, 1983), cujos destaques eram a voz única de Jon Oliva e os riffs agressivos de seu irmão Criss. Em 1984, o grupo assina com a Atlantic Records e lança no ano seguinte Power of the Night, produzido por Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth) e excursiona pelos Estados Unidos. Após a turnê, o grupo despede Keith Collins e traz para o posto de baixista Johnny Lee Middleton (ex-Lefty). Em 1986, o grupo viaja a Londres para a gravação do novo disco, Fight for the Rock, lançado no mesmo ano. O álbum marca a primeira mudança no som do Savatage, aproximando-se mais do classic rock, por influência de seus empresários. O som menor vigoroso desagrada aos fãs e à própria banda, quase culminando em um precoce final devido ao descontentamento interno dos membros e à fraca vendagem. Após ver o Savatage ao vivo pela primeira vez em um show em que o grupo abria para o Motörhead em Londres, Paul O’Neill se interessa em trabalhar com a banda. Com uma mudança de empresariamento, o contrato com a Atlantic é renegociado e, em 1987, sai Hall of the Mountain King, redirecionado às raízes mais pesadas do conjunto, ao mesmo tempo apresentando uma aproximação da música clássica, com o uso da composição de Edvard Grieg na faixa-título e na instrumental “Prelude to Madness”. O trabalho é aclamado por crítica e público. Após extensa turnê pelos Estados Unidos e Europa, que conta com o guitarrista de apoio Chris Caffery tocando fora do palco, o grupo se reúne para dar início aos trabalhos do próximo disco. Durante as sessões de gravação e composição, Jon Oliva é internado numa clínica de reabilitação. Em 1990, sai Gutter Ballet, seguido por uma turnê que dura todo o ano no velho continente e pela América do Norte. Para os shows, Caffery é efetivado como membro do grupo. Gutter Ballet retoma a evolução iniciada em Hall of the Mountain King, aproximando-se mais, desta vez, dos musicais da Broadway - a faixa-título e “When the Crowds are Gone”, os dois vídeos lançados do disco, foram compostas após Jon Oliva assistir “Phantom of the Opera” na Broadway. O álbum também marca uma maior participação de Paul O’Neill no processo de composição das letras, função que viria a ser exclusivamente sua a partir de então.... Após a turnê européia no início de 2002, Jack Frost é demitido para um retorno nunca concretizado de Al Pitrelli, desempregado após o final abrupto do Megadeth. Para a turnê no verão do mesmo, citando compromissos assumidos anteriormente, Pitrelli é substituído por Jeff Waters (Annihilator). Com essa formação, o Savatage se apresenta ao vivo pela última vez em Belgrado, na antiga Iugoslávia, em 06 de agosto de 2002. Desde então, Jon Oliva e Chris Caffery seguiram carreiras solos, Zak Stevens voltou à cena musical com o CircleIICircle, Jeff Plate se juntou ao Metal Church, o TSO, além de lançar The Lost Christmas Eve em 2004, continuou a fazer turnês de muito sucesso pelos Estados Unidos, e o hiato do Savatage nunca ficou bem explicado. Savatage is an American heavy metal band founded in Tampa, Florida, in the late 70s by the name of Avatar by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, the Metropolis. In 1979, drummer Steve Wacholz joins the band, and after countless bassist, the line-up stabilizes with Keith Collins.
