Os Diagonais tiveram carreira curta, lançando apenas dois discos. Ambos na virada da década. O Soul no Brasil influenciava tímidamente os músicos na década de 60. Dificuldades de conseguir os discos e o sucesso do samba e do rock, fizeram o ritmo chegar tardiamente. Ainda sim, haviam verdadeiros heróis que buscaram esta sonoridade até então pouco conhecida pelo grande público. Os Diagonais foram um destes baluartes e talvez tenham pago um preço alto por serem pioneiros. Começaram, inicialmente, como Bossa Trio, em 64, tendo um jovem Hyldon entre os integrantes. Com este nome, a banda gravou vários singles mas não conseguiu o destaque esperado. Ainda nesta década, mudaram de nome e diretrizes, formando então Os Diagonais. O grupo mantinha a base do Bossa Trio com Cassiano, seu irmão, Hyldon e ganhava novos membros. A formação, que mudava constantemente, contou com gente do naipe de Luís Wagner, o pianista Osmar Milito e até Carlos Dafé. Só feras. O disco de estréia, lançado em 69, ainda era uma amostra do som que estava por vir. Basicamente feito de Pout-pourri, mostrava um Cassiano ainda tímido nas composições. O LP contava apenas com duas canções do baiano e o restante de números consagrados da música brasileira. De Ary Barroso a Caetano, o disco possuía uma aura de pilantragem nos arranjos. Mesmo não primando pela originalidade, ainda existíam momentos de brilho em tracks como “Não dá pra entender” e a divertidíssima Clarimunda, ambas compostas por Cassiano. “General da banda”, famosa por Ivan Lins, também ganhava uma bonita versão num disco que mostra Os Diagonais ainda bem crus. Sob a batuta do baiano Cassiano, lançariam em 71, um dos discos mais importantes do Soul brasileiro: Cada um na sua. Com 14 pedradas variando dos sons mais rápidos às baladas, conseguiam misturar poderosos arranjos de metais e deliciosas harmonias vocais. Alguns, devido a força dos metais, comparam a banda com conjuntos da Motown. Não estão errados, mas os caras também passeavam livremente entre o Doo Wop, Samba e o recém criado Funk. Tudo sem ficar preso a nenhum deles, criaram uma identidade própria. Ainda assim, é possível sentir o sabor de Detroit em canções como “Sai de lado”, com metais em ataque emoldurando belos backing vocals. As lentas “Vou perder você”, “Eliana” e a música que dá titulo ao LP, mostram o potêncial vocal dos integrantes que se consagrariam em suas carreiras solo. Destaque também para a funkíssima “Novos Planos para o verão” e sua letra com refrão chiclete e a quase abstrata “Tema de Fanny”, um instrumental agoniante e que abusa das repetições ritmicas. Demais. Se o disco não ajudou a banda a estourar, pelo menos conseguiu aproxima-la de Tim Maia, recém chegado dos EUA e com fome de sucesso. Os Diagonais foram sua back band nos primeiros discos e responsáveis diretos pelo sucesso do cantor. No entanto, depois de “Cada um na sua”, a banda, mesmo tocando com um dos maiores cantores do país na época, chegou ao fim. Com os projetos solo de Cassiano, Hyldon e a ruptura com Maia, a banda perdeu seu rumo. Seus dois discos hoje em dia viraram artigos raríssimos em sebos e são disputados a tapa pelos gringos. A redescoberta do som, ainda que tardia, felizmente aconteceu. Mas falta muito para este grupo ter seu devido reconhecimento e não ser apenas lembrada por ser a primeira banda de Cassiano e Hyldon.
