Nascido na Califórnia, Ben Harper cresceu ouvindo blues, folk, soul, r&b e reggae. Aprendeu a tocar guitarra ainda criança e montou diversas bandas em sua adolescência, sempre influenciado por nomes como: Blues Traveler, Hootie & the Blowfish e Phish. Sua carreira profissional como artista solo começou em 1993 com “Welcome To The Cruel World”. Sempre seguindo um intervalo de dois anos, foram lançados “Fight For Your Mind” (1995), “The Will To Live” (1997) e “Burn To Shine” (1999). Em 2004 o californiano estava de volta com um novo trabalho “There Will be a light”. O disco que reúne 11 faixas conta com a participação do grupo gospel Blind Boys of Alabama, que deu ao álbum uma nova roupagem e trouxe elementos da música country, gospel e da soul music. Ben Harper lançou trabalhos que lhe deram o ‘status’ de um dos artistas mais importantes da atualidade. Além de sua música, a aparência e a atitude do músico impressionavam a todos, principalmente em suas performances ao vivo, que não são poucas, já que ele faz em média 150 shows por ano. Foi em função de toda essa consagração que o cantor conquistou ao lado do grupo The Blind Boys of Alabama, o Grammy de melhor álbum de Soul Gospel pelo disco “There Will Be a Light”. Em agosto de 2007: Ben Harper lança o álbum “Lifeline”, centrado no soul acústico americano, respeitando as tradicionais raízes do género. O processo de criação de “Lifeline” começou após o fim da tour de “Both Sides of the Gun”, em meados de Novembro do ano passado. Ben Harper e os, The Innocent Criminals, ficaram concentrados num estúdio de Paris para gravar e mixar o álbum, o que ocorreu em apenas uma semana.
