Patricia Lee “Patti” Smith é uma cantora, poetisa e artista plástica americana que foi altamente inovadora no cenário de punk rock nova-iorquino com seu álbum de 1975, “Horses”. Chamada de “Avó do Punk”, ela integrou as performances de poesia beat com o rock de três acordes. A canção mais famosa de Smith, “Because The Night”, foi composta com Bruce Springsteen e ocupou o 13º lugar no Billboard Hot 100 em 1978. Em 2007, foi inserida no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Created as a daughter of a Jehovah's Witness mother, she assumes he had a strong education based on the Bible, but dropped the religion as a teenager because she felt it was too restrictive. Later wrote the opening verse of his cover version of "Gloria" in response to this experience. After graduating from Deptford Township High School in 1964, Patti starts working in the industry. During these years, Patti also writes criticism of rock, some of which have been published in Creem.
