Iniciou sua trajetória musical quando, aos 18 anos, mudou-se para o Recife, a fim de estudar. Na capital pernambucana, juntou-se ao grupo folclórico Grupo Construção, do qual faziam parte Teca Calazans, cantora, Naná Vasconcelos, percussionista e Marcelo Melo e Toinho Alves, músicos do Quinteto Violado. Em 1967, mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro, onde trabalhou com a cantora Eliana Pittman. Em seguida, juntou-se a Naná Vasconcelos, Nelson Ângelo e Franklin, formando o Quarteto Livre. O grupo acompanhou o cantor Geraldo Vandré em diversos shows, inclusive na emblemática "Caminhando". Devido a problemas políticos com a ditadura militar da época, o grupo se dissolveu. Em 1968, a cantora Eliana Pittman gravou a primeira composição de Geraldo Azevedo, "Aquela rosa". No incício dos anos 1970, formou dupla com o também pernambucano Alceu Valença. Ainda em 1970, a dupla participou do Festival Universitário da TV Tupi com as composições "78 rotações" e "Planetário". A boa performance da dupla chamou a atenção da gravadora Copacabana. Em 1972, lançou com Alceu Valença, seu primeiro LP. No mesmo ano, e ainda com o parceiro Alceu Valença, tomou parte do Festival Internacional da Canção, com a composição "Papagaio do futuro", que contou com a participação de Jackson do Pandeiro. Ainda com o parceiro Alceu e com Zé Ramalho, fez grande sucesso em fins dos anos 1970, com "Táxi lunar". Também no mesmo período fez grande sucesso com "Caravana", em parceria com Carlos Fernando e que fez parte da trilha sonora da novela "Gabriela", da TV Globo. Em seu trabalho faz um mistura entre as sofisticadas harmonias da Bossa Nova e a viva influência da música negra. É autor de composições de puro lirismo, como "Dia branco" e frevos embrasados, como "Tempo tempero" e "Pega fogo coração". Teve diversas músicas utilizadas em novelas e outros programas de televisão, entre os quais, "Juritis e borboletas", na novela "Saramandaia"e "Arraial dos tucanos", do seriado "Sítio do pica-pau amarelo", ambos na TV Globo. Em 1979 e 1980, participou do projeto coletivo de gravação de frevos, "Asas da América", volumes I e II. Em 1984, participou com os músicos Elomar, Vital Farias e Xangai, do Show "Cantoria", no Teatro Castro Alves, em Salvador, do qual resultou o disco "Cantoria I", gravado ao vivo, nos dias 13, 14 e 15 de agosto daquele ano. Nesse disco, interpretou "Novena", de sua autoria e M. Vinícius e "Semente de Adão", dele e Carlos Fernando, cantada em dueto com Xangai. Participou, ainda, como violonista em diversas faixas do disco. Em 1988, foi lançado o disco "Cantoria II". Em 1996, participou no Canecão, no Rio de Janeiro, do show "O grande encontro", ao lado de Alceu Valença, Elba Ramalho e Zé Ramalho. Do show resultou o CD "O grande encontro", onde interpretou "O ciúme", de Caetano Veloso, "Dia branco", de sua autoria e Renato Rocha, "Veja (Margarida)", de Vital Farias e "Chorando e cantando", dele e Fausto Nilo. Em 1997, gravou "O grande encontro II", com Elba e Zé Ramalho, no qual tocou viola e violão, além de interpretar canções como "O princípio do prazer", de sua autoria e "Canta coração", parceria com Carlos Fernando. Em 2006, prestes a completar 43 anos de carreira, realizou show na Lona Cultural Gilberto Gil, em Realengo, no Rio de Janeiro, repassando diversos clássicos de sua trajetória, como "Dia branco, e Táxi Lunar", entre outros. Nessa ocasião, a gravadora Biscoito Fino lançou a coletânea "100 anos de frevo - É de perder o sapato", uma coletânea com dois CDs, da qual participaram vários artistas consagrados da MPB, como Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Alceu Valença, Maria Bethânia, Elba Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo, Silvério Pessoa, Geraldo Azevedo e Chico Buarque, entre outros. Em 2011, apresentou-se no evento "São João carioca", uma festa junina realizada pela prefeitura da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Do show, participaram artistas como Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Elba Ramalho, Alcione e Dominguinhos.
