Em 1968, juntamente com Paulinho Boca de Cantor, Luis Galvão, Pepeu Gomes e Baby Consuelo (hoje Baby do Brasil), formou o grupo Os Novos Baianos, que fez sua estréia com o show "Desembarque dos bichos depois do dilúvio", em Salvador. No ano seguinte, participou, com o conjunto, do V Festival da Música Popular Brasileira da TV Record de São Paulo, com sua composição "De Vera" (c/ Galvão). A canção foi registrada no primeiro LP do grupo, lançado nesse mesmo ano, ao lado de outras da mesma dupla de parceiros como "É ferro na boneca" e "A casca de banana que pisei". Ainda no início dos anos 1970, transferiu-se com os outros integrantes do conjunto Os Novos Baianos para o Rio de Janeiro, vivendo inicialmente em um apartamento em Botafogo e, mais tarde, em um sítio em Vargem Grande. Em 1972, o grupo incorporou o baixista carioca Dadi e os percussionistas Jorginho Gomes, Baixinho e Luis Bolacha. Redirecionado musicalmente pela influência de João Gilberto, amigo de infância de Luis Galvão, o conjunto gravou, pela Som Livre, o LP "Acabou Chorare", contendo, entre outras, canções de sua parceria com Galvão, como a faixa título, "Mistério do planeta", "A menina dança", "Um bilhete pra Didi", "Tinindo trincando" e "Preta, Pretinha", esta última vindo a se tornar um dos maiores sucessos do grupo, que também ficaria conhecido pela releitura de "Brasil pandeiro" (Assis Valente), incluída nesse mesmo LP. Em 1973, ainda com o grupo, lançou o LP "Novos Baianos Futebol Clube". Neste disco, foram registrados outros sucessos de sua autoria, como "Besta é tu" (c/ Pepeu e Galvão), "Sorrir e cantar como Bahia" e "Só se não for brasileiro nessa hora", ambas em parceria com Galvão, entre outras. O disco incluiu também uma releitura de "Samba da minha terra" (Dorival Caymmi), que se tornaria outro grande sucesso do conjunto. Em 1975, lançou seu primeiro disco solo, "Moraes Moreira". No ano seguinte, iniciou uma parceria com o poeta Fausto Nilo, com quem compôs "Santa fé", tema de abertura da novela "Roque Santeiro" (Rede Globo). Ainda em 1976, participou, como cantor, do Trio Elétrico de Dodô e Osmar. Constam da relação dos intérpretes de suas canções, Daniela Mercury ("Monumento vivo", com Davi Moraes), Ney Matogrosso, Luis Melodia ("Mistério do planeta", com Luis Galvão), Fagner, Simone ("Pão e poesia", com Fausto Nilo), Marisa Monte ("Dê um rolê", com Galvão) e Gal Costa ("Festa do Interior", com Abel Silva, música mais tocada em 1982), entre vários outros. Em linguagem de cordel, lançou, em 2007, o livro “A história dos Novos Baianos e outros versos” (Língua Geral Editora), acompanhado de um CD que registra sua voz na leitura do cordel e também de poemas inéditos e letras de sua autoria. O lançamento foi celebrado na Modern Sound (RJ), com leitura de trechos do livro e performance musical, ao lado de seu filho, o guitarrista Davi Moraes. Lançou, em 2012, o CD “A revolta dos ritmos”, primeiro disco de inéditas em sete anos. No repertório, “Feito Jorge Ser Amado”, “A dor do poeta”, “Brasileira Academia” e a faixa-título, entre outras. Também nesse ano, participou da série “Grandes nomes, grandes discos”, na casa Miranda (RJ), falando sobre o LP “Acabou Chorare” e interpretando canções do disco que gravou com o grupo Os Novos Baianos em 1972. A mesa contou com a participação do pesquisador Fred Góes. Ainda em 2012, foi um dos palestrantes da série “De conversa em conversa” do 3º Salão de Leitura, realizado no Teatro Popular de Niterói. Nesse mesmo ano, celebrando os 40 anos de lançamento do disco “Acabou chorare”, que gravou como integrante do grupo Os Novos Baianos, fez show ao lado do filho, Davi Moraes, no Instituto Moreira Salles. Em seguida, saiu em turnê comemorativa, que teve estreia no Studio RJ, no Rio, desta vez com a participação de outros músicos. Em 2013, fez show de lançamento do CD “A revolta dos ritmos” no espaço Miranda (RJ). Nesse mesmo ano, foi contemplado com o Prêmio da Música Brasileira, nas categorias Melhor Cantor Regional e Melhor Álbum Regional, pelo CD “A revolta dos ritmos”.
