Nascido em 1939, Marvin Gaye dedicou sua vida à música. Tanto foi que, apesar de ter sido um artista absolutamente genial e bem-sucedido profissionalmente, nunca teve grandes alegrias no lado pessoal. Gaye, porém, utilizava-se dos fracassos nos relacionamentos para compor canções de sucesso e álbuns que entraram para a história. Depois de passar por alguns grupos e adquirir experiência, lançou “The Soulful Moods Of”, em 1961, encantando a todos pela profundidade das harmonias e melodias em faixas como “How Deep Is The Ocean?” e “How High The Moon”. Durante todas a décadas de 60 e 70 continuou lançando clássicos e duetos com Mary Wells, Kim Weston e Tammi Terrell. São dessa fase discos como “Marvin & Mary Together”, de 1964, “Easy”, de 1969. A parceria com Tammi Terrell parece ter sido a mais dolorosa. Embora eles não fossem amantes - como a imprensa gostava de especular - a morte da cantora, vítima de um tumor no cérebro em 1970, deixou Marvin Gaye em depressão. “What’s Going On” de 1971, cuja canção homônima chegou a ser recusada pela gravadora que não a considerou comercial o suficiente, é outro marco na carreira do cantor. O ao vivo “Live!”, de 1974 e “Here My Dear”, de 1978, que falava sobre o fim de seu casamento com Anna, também tiveram ótima repercussão. Logo que seu divórcio foi concluído, casou-se com Janis Hunter, com quem ele teve dois filhos quando ainda era casado legalmente com Anna.
