Big Brother and the Holding Company is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1965 as part of the psychedelic scene that also originated the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane. The original band members were Sam Andrew (rhythm guitar), James Gurley (rhythm guitar), Peter Albin (bass) and Chuck Jones (drums), replaced by Dave Getz in 1966. The popularity of the group increased with the addition in June 1966, the singer Janis Joplin. She was recruited by the band's manager at the time, Chet Helms, who had lived in Austin, Texas, where Joplin studied.
